plate 3 The ferrule brush is used for large surfaces or solid areas of color. To avoid streaks, the brush is turned as color is applied. As this is a difficult skill to master, it is advisable to have apprentices practice from time to time on blank paper. See plate 3, in which red is applied by sliding the brush leaving streaks.
